Painting
Crystal and Glass
I always knew my destiny was to be an artist.
I was fortunate to have parents who were talented and creative,
and encouraged my sisters and me to pursue the art world. My
early years as an illustrator taught me the rules of color,
value, and composition always apply to any subject or style
of painting. Watercolor captured my heart , and I never looked
back. Watercolor continues to fascinate and surprise me. It
is a medium that allows the spirit of the painting to thrive.
What thrills me most with every painting is watching the development
and transformation that take place. Teaching is my other passion.
In 1991 I opened Emerald Lake Art Academy, in Redwood City,
CA. Teaching 60 to 70 students a week ranging in age from 6
to 86 years old. In 1999 I decided to paint full time, and to
instruct watercolor workshops. One of my goals was to be a published
artist. I have now met that goal and my book "Stunning Crystal
and Glass" Published by North Light Books is reaching aspiring
artists worldwide. Directly related to the release of my book,
I was approached by Teaching Art Ltd., in the UK to make my
first instructional video. Stay tuned for more... -Joyce Faulknor.

We enjoyed a very informative
talk on "Marketing your Art" by art consultant Dimitri Kourouniotis.
He spoke about getting a business license, marketing and planning
events, creating a space to sell, dealing with galleries, dealing
with customers, pricing art, negotiating on terms, follow-up,
relationship building, customer service, art websites and selling
art online.

Annual Juried Art Show

EARTH
Expressions
FALC Annual Juried Show at the Cupertino Community
Hall - September 13 and 14, 2008
Deadline for entry August 11, 2008 / Entry
forms will be available shortly on the website and members will
be notified.
The Show will be sponsored by the Rotary Club
of Cupertino. Stefan Baumann of The Grand View (Public TV series)
will judge the Show. Submissions will be in the form of photographs.
As in past years the FALC show will be part of the Cupertino
Fall Festival. In keeping with the environmental theme of the
festival this year, our show will focus on a very broad theme
of EARTH-EXPRESSIONS. Artists are encouraged to submit artwork
that would include whatever subject matter the artist chooses
to portray about their experiences on EARTH - from appreciation
of the beauty of nature to abstract expressions of concepts
like interdependence, tolerance, conservation etc. The possibilities
of subject matter are limitless.

Profile
of the Month
|
Every month we bring you the profile of a
FALC member who has contributed time toward the club. Our profile
this month is of Raja Guha Thakurta who joined the club in 2007
and has enthusiastically helped with organizing FALC events.
He will be organizing the Midsummer Art Show this year in June.
He specializes in detailed pencil portraits of people and animals.
He also dabbles in other media including oil/acrylic painting,
wood carving, glass/ceramic painting, calligraphy, photography,
etc. Over the years, he has done several commissioned pieces.
His love of art can be traced back to a family of artists: mother,
sister, and especially his grandmother whose charcoal portraits
served as a tremendous source of inspiration. He was born in
Calcutta, India, moved to the US in 1985, and has been a professor
of astronomy at the University of California Santa Cruz since
1994 - his day (and night!) job. We are very pleased to have
him as part of our FALC group.

Volunteers
Needed!
|
-
Refreshments
coordinator: (Dee is unable
to continue in 2008) 2 people needed. We need someone to make
a commitment every other month to set-up the refreshments
and coffee, find volunteers to bring snacks, and remind (before
each meeting) the volunteers to bring something, clear the
table after the meetings.
-
Panel
Rental: We need 2 people
to take over the Panel Rental. You would store at least 12
3ft x 6ft panels and be the contact person when someone wanted
to rent them. As an incentive, we will offer $200 a year for
one person to store 24 panels or $100 each to two people storing
12 panels each. You can use the panels rent-free for your
own events during the year and will automatically be first
in line for them for events like SVOS.
