Jose Arenas

Critique of FALC Members' work

Jose Arenas is an award winning artist who is also a Foothill college instructor, well known for his insightful critiques. He has a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from UC Davis. He has taught many areas of art - 2D & 3D Design, Mural Art, Life Drawing, Portrait Drawing, Collage and Composition, Experimental Drawing, Materials and Media, Color and Portfolio Developement.

All members are encouraged to bring in 1 or 2 pieces of artwork that they would like to have critiqued. It does not have to be your best work; it could be a work in progress that you have a problem with, or a painting on which you require a fresh perspective.

At the March meeting

Deborah Pasturel gave a very interesting and entertaining talk about Post-Impressionist Art along with a slide show of paintings and artists being discussed. Ms. Pasturel teaches Art History at DeAnza college. If you are interested in taking one of her classes please visit the DeAnza college website for a listing.

Welcome to new member Nicole Hoerold!

Profile of the Month
Priyanka Gupta comes from Kolkata, India, also called the 'City of Joy' for its people and the passion with which they lead their lives. This passion has undoubtedly found its way into her own conception and expression of the colors of life through her art. A graduate of San Francisco Art Institute, Priyanka Gupta spends her time between Kolkata and California. Her pursuit for understanding art led her to study at the San Francisco Art Institute. She has been exhibiting her works in San Francisco, Silicon Valley and India since 2004. Some of her notable exhibits have been her solo exposition at the Academy of Fine Arts and Chitrakoot art gallery in Kolkata and shows at Stanford university, Togonon Gallery, Market Street Gallery and the Triton Museum in California. She has also been invited to participate in the Florence Biennale '09. She has received wide acclaim for her paintings and received reviews in the San Francisco Chronicle, Santa Clara weekly and Mountain View voice. Her works are mainly abstracts in acrylic, with a very rich use of color to express concepts rather than the use of form. Through her works, Priyanka attempts to bridge the cultural gaps between the eastern and western worlds that she inhabits and explore feminism and spirituality in the context of Indian society. Priyanka currently paints out of her studio in Mountain View, California.

FALC would like to thank Priyanka for offering to coordinate the AVArtfest event in 2009 along with Tanushri Mathur. Priyanka has always cheerfully volunteered to help with other events during the year too.
