Lecture - The Art of Art Marketing

Ketra brings over a decade of marketing communications, print and web publishing to her art career. Within the first 18 months of becoming a professional artist, she gleaned national press and had been juried into national exhibitions through her targeted approach to presenting her art to the most appropriate markets.

Ketra will talk about defining your brand as an artist, identifying your customers, crafting a message that speaks to those customers and staying in motion on marketing tasks.

Congratulations to The 2009 Cupertino Distinguished Artist!

We are proud to announce that the City of Cupertino has chosen our very own Iona Ezaki to receive the 2009 award for Cupertino Distinguished Artist!

Iona was past president of the Fine Arts League of Cupertino from 2006 to 2008 and is currently vice president of the club. Iona has donated her paintings to several charities including the JW House, which was started by JW Knapen before he died in 2005, to house the families of ill children while they received treatment. She has also donated painting to the Wilkins family in Montana as their daughter Brianna died suddenly in a snow storm.

She has also been commissioned to do the portraits of former SF football 49er players, Jerry Rice and Joe Montana as they sold prints of their portraits to raise funds for children's charities and Jerry had her do a portrait of his mother to give to his dad. She has also donated to the Bay Area Breast Cancer Society, Los Gatos Museum, and the Yellowstone Historical Society. She has lead the implementation of holding an auction at Falc's Fall Fest to continue in her efforts to help local charities.

Iona has a love of the National Parks and was commissioned to do seven paintings for a National Parks DVD put out by Finley Holiday, which works are also included in a poetry book titled, "Parks Portrayed in Pen and Paint". One of her works of the Roosevelt Arch is now being used at the Livingston Montana Chamber of Commerce as their Logo, and some of her park images are used in several local Montana magazines. She has studied with Stefan Baumann for the past 20 years, and has furthered her art education at De Anza College, Pacific Art League, Palo Alto Art Center, SF Art Academy, and the Creative Art Center.

Iona’s current “day” job is a Purchasing Agent for a biomedical company, but one of her past positions in the early 90’s was working for the Thomas Kinkade company, Light Post Publishing. There she was part of the team that helped bring the artists company from his studio to a multi-million dollar company.

Iona has won numerous awards in the Bay Area including with the Los Gatos Art Association, The Cupertino Fine Arts League, the Saratoga Art Club, the Santa Clara County Fair, the Alameda County Fair, and the San Mateo Fair and at the Yellowstone Gallery art show. She was awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Landscape painting at the Cupertino Fall Fest in 2008 for her painting, "Napa Dreams".

FALC Guidelines - Criteria for Jurying-in new members

FALC has been fortunate this year to welcome many new members, and with our annual art show coming up in September, we can look forward to many others being interested in joining our club. One of the questions that we get asked the most from current members and those who are interested in joining is about our criteria for acceptance. Our process is clear and simple. Anyone who wants to join needs to bring three pieces of art to one of our meetings. The members present at that meeting will vote, and, if a majority of people approve, that person will be accepted, pay their dues, and become an exhibiting member.

The question about criteria is not so simple. We all know that Art is subjective. Sometimes we benefit from that subjectivity, and sometimes we don't. No one can tell you what good Art is or isn't.

As a juried club, FALC strives to maintain a certain standard of proficiency since organizations that invite us to exhibit assume a certain selectivity. One rule of thumb commonly used when voting in new members is to ask yourself this question - Would I like to exhibit with this work? Would this new work add to the reputation of the club? Just as we support each other by bringing our best work to shows and by providing new, fresh work for the painting changes at Quinlan, we can use our Artists' eyes to make decisions about what work will be hanging beside us at the next show.

Voting "no" during the jurying-in process does not bar an artist from joining the club. The artist can still be a member, just not an "exhibiting member". Non-exhibiting members can attend demos and meetings that provide an environment for their art to grow. As they continue to develop their skills, they are welcome to jury in at a later date.

FALC Guidelines - Copyrighted material

The laws regarding copyrighted material are complex and not uniform from state to state. In order to avoid liability and the burden of determining whether a particular image involves copyright infringement, FALC has created the following guidelines for member artists. FALC assumes that it is the respoinsibility of the artist to honestly follow these guidelines and assumes no liability for work that is submitted or displayed not following these guidelines. It reserves the right to disqualify a painting if there is reasonable doubt about copyright infringement or plagiarism.

  • Work entered for a show must be the artist's original work in concept and execution.
  • It cannot be copied from copyrighted material or photographs belonging to another person or organizaion except with the copyright holder's explicit written permission.
  • It cannot be the reproduction of a painting done by another person even if the original artist is acknowledged on the painting.
  • It cannot be the reproduction of a historic painting.
