Terri Hill - Watercolor Demonstration

Terri has been producing wonderful works of communication for the last 31 years. Her background in Graphic Design, Photography, Art Direction, Marketing and Advertising have all influenced her Watercolor Paintings. Terri's paintings are known for their rich, saturated color and unusual vantage point. She paints what she loves. You can see the influence of living in wonderful Northern California....it's pretty obvious that she runs, bikes and swims as well as enjoys the wonderful local fruits, vegetables and wines of the area.

Terri shows her work at local art and wine events, restaurants, galleries and Open studios. You can also find Terri's paintings at Viewpoints Gallery in Los Altos www.viewpointsgallery.com, at Los Gatos Museums Gallery and on her website, www.designerhill.com

The 2009 FALC Fall Fest Annual Juried Show

Thank you all for your participation and involvement in the 2009 Fall Fest Show!

We hope that all members visited the show to see the best that FALC has to offer. The Silent Auction raised close to $1000 and 100% of the proceeds went to the West Valley Community Services who were delighted to receive this gift. The Reception brought together a happy community of FALC members, Rotary members and the City of Cupertino.

We would sincerely like to thank all the volunteers who made this event possible. The planning committee - Laurie Creveling, Iona Ezaki, Yelena Shabrova, Janki Chokshi, Ralph Otte and Nina Uppaluru spent many many hours coordinating all the details for months ahead of time. The show hanging crew headed by Belinda Lima did a wonderful job of displaying the artwork at its best. We would like to thank everyone involved with transporting the panels, setting up panels, receiving the paintings, taking down the show, gallery sitting, auction details and many more duties that were behind the scenes but made the event run smoothly.

We would also like to thank all our generous sponsors, the Rotary Club of Cupertino and the City of Cupertino.

Congratulations to all our award winners!

Congratulations to Kim Newell for winning the Best In Show Award

Iona Ezaki wins the 2009 Cupertino Distinguished Artist Award presented by Bob Harrison, Cupertino Fine Arts Chair

At the Reception

By Nava Attia-Benoit

Part of my fascination with painting portraits is that you can never predict how people react to them. Once it's on the canvas or paper, you are no longer in control of how they get interpreted by the viewer. And the ultimate example of that, for me, was at the 2009 FALC Annual show.

During the reception I was approached by a gentleman whom I have never met or seen before. We exchanged looks, mine quite puzzled as I had no clue who he is. He then pulled a hat out of his pocket and put it on - and I became speechless, as did the others who witnessed it. The similarity between him and a collage portrait I had in the show (titled "Vento Vermelho") was striking; even his shirt matched perfectly. He graciously agreed to have his photo taken next to the portrait, and introduced himself as Frank Diamanti, an actor with the Palo Alto Players and several other community theatres (www.frankdiamanti.com). He emailed me the following day, saying "Thank you for helping me to have one of the most delightful and surprising evenings of my life. This whole episode reinforces my belief that there is a kind of synchronicity to life that is as appealing as it is mysterious."

This was one reception I will never forget. After all, it's not every day that your painting comes to life, steps up to you and introduces itself.

Profile of the Month

Bill Steffin receives the 2009 Service Award presented by FALC President Laurie Creveling

Congratulations to Bill Steffin for winning the 2009 FALC Service Award in recognition of his many years of service to the club. Bill has been a member of FALC for 18 years and has served as Demo Coordinator for 9 of those years, arranging for demonstration artists for each of the general meetings during that time. Bill also invested his efforts in making the overhead mirror that we use for demonstrations, buying the panels that FALC has used for all the shows and organizing Art In The Park. "The more you give, the more it comes back to you" says Bill. FALC thanks him for all that he has done!

FALC Guidelines - Criteria for Jurying-in new members

FALC has been fortunate this year to welcome many new members, and with our annual art show coming up in September, we can look forward to many others being interested in joining our club. One of the questions that we get asked the most from current members and those who are interested in joining is about our criteria for acceptance. Our process is clear and simple. Anyone who wants to join needs to bring three pieces of art to one of our meetings. The members present at that meeting will vote, and, if a majority of people approve, that person will be accepted, pay their dues, and become an exhibiting member.

The question about criteria is not so simple. We all know that Art is subjective. Sometimes we benefit from that subjectivity, and sometimes we don't. No one can tell you what good Art is or isn't.

As a juried club, FALC strives to maintain a certain standard of proficiency since organizations that invite us to exhibit assume a certain selectivity. One rule of thumb commonly used when voting in new members is to ask yourself this question - Would I like to exhibit with this work? Would this new work add to the reputation of the club? Just as we support each other by bringing our best work to shows and by providing new, fresh work for the painting changes at Quinlan, we can use our Artists' eyes to make decisions about what work will be hanging beside us at the next show.

Voting "no" during the jurying-in process does not bar an artist from joining the club. The artist can still be a member, just not an "exhibiting member". Non-exhibiting members can attend demos and meetings that provide an environment for their art to grow. As they continue to develop their skills, they are welcome to jury in at a later date.

FALC Guidelines - Copyrighted material

The laws regarding copyrighted material are complex and not uniform from state to state. In order to avoid liability and the burden of determining whether a particular image involves copyright infringement, FALC has created the following guidelines for member artists. FALC assumes that it is the respoinsibility of the artist to honestly follow these guidelines and assumes no liability for work that is submitted or displayed not following these guidelines. It reserves the right to disqualify a painting if there is reasonable doubt about copyright infringement or plagiarism.

  • Work entered for a show must be the artist's original work in concept and execution.
  • It cannot be copied from copyrighted material or photographs belonging to another person or organizaion except with the copyright holder's explicit written permission.
  • It cannot be the reproduction of a painting done by another person even if the original artist is acknowledged on the painting.
  • It cannot be the reproduction of a historic painting.
