Slide
Show (40 paintings) and Discussion with Mike Bailey, current
President of National Watercolor Society
|
|
Most artists are quite interested
to obtain the 'inside information' of what sort of paintings
are chosen to be included in national shows and which of those
win awards. . . . . and WHY!
If you have ever been confronted
with choosing a painting to submit for a national show, you
know full well that this is a difficult decision. What should
you look for in your paintings to increase the odds that your
painting will be accepted? Should you make paintings specifically
for entry into shows? Should you submit paintings which are
in some way biased to the juror's painting style or taste?
What sort of subjects are accepted or shunned?
Mike Bailey will be presenting
a powerful slide show of forty award winning watercolor paintings
and will be discussing their attributes which most likely
was the reason for being selected for awards in different
shows. As the current president of National Watercolor Society,
he will bring first-hand experience of overseeing the jurying
and awards judging processes. Mike will also be telling 'tales'
and 'stories' about the jurying process in various societies,
including NWS. Join us for this exciting presentation and
bring your questions!
For information on Mike Bailey's
exhibits and the workshops that he teaches throughout the
year, please visit his website at http://www.mebaileyart.com/index.html

Profile
of the Month
|
|
|
Each month, FALC would like to honor a member
who has dedicated time and effort toward the club. This month
FALC would like to put the spotlight on Yao-Pi Hsu who has been
a member for many years and has always been involved and helpful
whenever possible.
Yao-Pi's statement - "I have worked in
the biosciences field as a research scientist for more than
thirty years. Years ago a trip back to China, my homeland inspired
me to get into photography. Since then I have continued to pursue
my interest in photography. Art and science each take a turn
in how I understand the world around me. As a fine art photographer
I apply the same principles I used in scientific research: search
and research, examine and reexamine, and explore concepts from
different perspective. I explore the world around me, as I look
for reflection, angle or perspectives that represents how diverse
and abundant the world expresses its various forms and beauties.
The joy and rewards of being in the right place, at the right
time to freeze the moment and to capture the beauty of our surrounding
are invigorating".

FALC
Guidelines - Criteria for Jurying-in new members
|
FALC has been fortunate this year to welcome many
new members and we can look forward to many others being interested
in joining our club. One of the questions that we get asked
the most from current members and those who are interested in
joining is about our criteria for acceptance. Our process is
clear and simple. Anyone who wants to join needs to bring three
pieces of art to one of our meetings. The members present at
that meeting will vote, and, if a majority of people approve,
that person will be accepted, pay their dues, and become an
exhibiting member.
As a juried club, FALC strives to maintain a certain
standard of proficiency since organizations that invite us to
exhibit assume a certain selectivity. One rule of thumb commonly
used when voting in new members is to ask yourself this question
- Would I like to exhibit with this work? Would this new work
add to the reputation of the club? Just as we support each other
by bringing our best work to shows and by providing new, fresh
work for the painting changes at Quinlan, we can use our Artists'
eyes to make decisions about what work will be hanging beside
us at the next show.
Voting "no" during the jurying-in process does
not bar an artist from joining the club. The artist can still
be a member, just not an "exhibiting member". Non-exhibiting
members can attend demos and meetings that provide an environment
for their art to grow. As they continue to develop their skills,
they are welcome to jury in at a later date.

FALC
Guidelines - Copyrighted material
|
The laws regarding copyrighted
material are complex and not uniform from state to state. In order
to avoid liability and the burden of determining whether a particular
image involves copyright infringement, FALC has created the following
guidelines for member artists. FALC assumes that it is the respoinsibility
of the artist to honestly follow these guidelines and assumes
no liability for work that is submitted or displayed not following
these guidelines. It reserves the right to disqualify a painting
if there is reasonable doubt about copyright infringement or plagiarism.
- Work entered for a show must be the
artist's original work in concept and execution.
- It cannot be copied from copyrighted
material or photographs belonging to another person or organizaion
except with the copyright holder's explicit written permission.
- It cannot be the reproduction of a
painting done by another person even if the original artist
is acknowledged on the painting.
- It cannot be the reproduction of a
historic painting.
